Question: Is this normal?

Jeff writes from Clemmons, North Carolina: "I recently had an Owens Corning roof installed. After a recent snow storm I notice that the snow melted much more quickly off of my roof than on my neighbors on either side of me. Is this normal?"

Answer: There are actually several factors to take into consideration on this. Darker shingles can melt snow fast. Newer shingles can melt snow faster. Less insulation in your attic can melt snow faster. A warmer attic can melt snow faster. These are just a few things that could be causing the difference you see. It is impossible for me to say conclusively which one or combination of factors is causing the difference.
