Question: How can I get to the recommended R-13 if each panel is only R 7.5?

Igor writes from Penfield, New York: "I am thinking of using Insulpink boards on the block walls of my basement. How can I get to the recommended R13 if each panel is only R7.5? Can they be stacked or should Foamular boards be used instead? Second question -what's the recommended insulation for the cavity above the sill plate?"

Answer: The space above the sill plate is typically insulated with unfaced Fiberglas™ insulation cut to fit in the cavity. INSULPINK® insulation is a FOAMULAR® insulation product designed for basement walls but it is only produced in R-7.5 and R-10. If R-13 is needed to insulate the basement walls, 2x4 wood framing will need to be added. Kraft-faced R-13 is used inside the framing. The paper should be installed toward the warm-in-winter side.
